The Cold Brew Ritual

Cold Brew Coffee by Urban Remedy

For some of us, coffee is an essential daily ritual. Honor it…

When you need a  pick-me-up, choose one that will continue to hold you up.  The rich and smooth blend of cold brew coffee can actually support your body at a deeper level. The cold brew process of making coffee never uses heat. Coffee beans are slowly brewed for 24 hours to create a beautifully rich coffee that is much less acidic and much more kind on your tummy.

Life should never be about depriving yourself of the things you love, but instead finding a healthier version.  Here’s the key: If you love it, make sure it loves you back.

Too much overly processed coffee in your diet can deplete your body and create an imbalance. On the other, cold brew coffee (Did I mention it’s loaded with antioxidants?) can actually be of benefit to your liver and support your overall health.

So, the next time you’re craving coffee and a donut, ask yourself – “Will it love me back”? Of course it won’t, but you have something even better now! It’s time to make friends with organic cold brew coffee, and do yourself a favor, add an occasional almond brownie. The way we believe in food is simple. Give yourself the joy of experiencing what you love, what makes you feel good;  just make sure it loves you back. Stay faithful to your health while enjoying the flavors of life. That’s all we ask.

Eliminate Toxins with a Juice Cleanse

by Megan Fleming on September 9, 2014, no comments

juice-cleanse-by-urban-remedy-eliminate-toxins

There isn’t a lot we can do to eliminate environmental toxins, but we can eliminate those in our own home.

Cleaning agents, solvents, body products, and beauty products can consist of harmful chemicals, metals and preservatives. Over time, these toxins can accumulate in the body and affect its systems. This toxic accumulation can have a huge affect on the brain, the nervous system, the endocrine system, and the organs. By rethinking the products you use in your home and on your body, you are creating a place of health within your home.

The minute we step outside our home, it’s a different story.  We are bombarded by millions of particles that can gradually deteriorate our health. Here’s the good news… Our body is beautifully designed to help us filter out anything harmful, working to keep us healthy, despite living in a polluted world.  The body is wise and almost always knows how to heal itself. Even so, it needs our support to remain clean and toxin free. Our actions, especially when it comes to what we eat, can support our body in its continuous effort to restore vitality.

One of the best ways you can cleanse and alkalize your body is through a raw juice cleanse. Raw juice does two things: it restores nutrients to the body and it eliminates toxins. If you drink raw juice daily, you are significantly supporting your body’s effort to sustain optimal health! If you are new to cleansing, try a 1 day cleanse weekly for one month. Start with a signature cleanse, move up to the purity cleanse and bring it on home with the super green. The more you cleanse, the more your body will beg to be nourished and restored. When you support your body in feeling its best, it will let you know what it needs to be healthy and whole.

Jumpstart your Metabolism

Jumpstart your Metabolism

When you hear the word metabolism, the words fit and thin might resonate within your auto-brain. There are just certain loaded words in our culture that excite us. Metabolism, followed by the word booster, is one of those words.

Metabolism, is more of a grand concept than the simplified version we have come to know, as it refers to body weight. Metabolism is the interaction of enzymes within all cells that allows them to grow, reproduce and maintain life. Without metabolism, you simply could not exist. Metabolism includes the very important transformative role of digestion: breaking down the proteins, carbohydrates and fats of your diet to provide the energy your body needs to function.

Yeah okay, so lets get to the “how” we increase our metabolism.

Your habits, lifestyle and diet greatly influence the rate of your metabolism. Raw living foods offer their own enzymes, which means your body doesn’t have to work as hard to digest them.  Think of your metabolism as a fire; the wood being the foods you’ve eaten and the strength of the fire depending on the quality of your digestive enzymes. Without the strength of the fire, the wood cannot burn. The residing wood represents the undigested food in your gut. Over time, this creates excess fat where toxins can accumulate.

One key to increasing your metabolism is increasing the fire within.

Boost Your Metabolism The Fire within

Boosting your metabolism isn’t just about slimming down, even though that can be a resulting perk of caring for the needs of your body. Think of it this way, all streams and rivers eventually lead to an ocean. The ocean of you represents the deepest core level of your health; whenever you begin to attend to the channels that connect to that ocean, you learn to eventually connect to the whole source. When you boost and support a healthy metabolism, you are benefiting your whole body.

Food as medicine is truly about supporting the systems of your body via optimal nutrition.

We have thoughtfully created our cleanses, meals and kits to support you and your efforts towards better health. Our Metabolism Kit was specifically crafted to help you boost your metabolism. Like most of us who lead busy lives and desire accessible healthy choices, our Metabolism Kit offers you an easy way to move through your day with everything you need to feel nourished, satisfied and on target.

Fight Depression with a Healthy Diet

by Megan Fleming on August 19, 2014, no comments

fight depression with a healthy diet by Urban Remedy

An astounding number of Americans suffer from Depression.

Studies show, that despite current efforts to treat depression, it is becoming more prevalent. The U.S. Center for Mental Health Services even states that 1 in every 33 children suffer from depression. That is a hard statistic to accept. With depression rates rising, especially in children, shouldn’t we be asking more questions?

What is causing this significant increase in depression?

For one, just the rate at which we move on all levels has increased. With technology, transportation allows us to move to and from places more quickly than ever. Our brain processes information at a high speed rate alongside the internet. We are able to do more and know more as the world around us continues to move faster.

What does our high speed world do to our nervous system and our actual ability to keep up?

In our pursuit of survival, success and happiness, have we forgotten the importance of slowing down and making time for our self? An important aspect of slowing down and tuning into our intrinsic world is that we learn to listen to our own body.  The multi-tasking mode of our society can drawn us away our internal self and nature. In fact, studies have shown that the lack of unstructured play and time in nature is greatly contributing to emotional disorders in children. Are adults any different? I think we all need time to play, be and get lost in nature.

How has our diet evolved and changed over time? Does what we eat affect our emotional health?

Another aspect of everyday life that has significantly changed over time is our diet. The average American diet is high in calorie and low in nutrition. We have been taught that it is the brain that controls the rest of the body, but the brain, in fact, receives most of its signals from the gut. If the enteric nervous system, (the intrinsic nervous system of your gut), is not receiving the vitamins, minerals, fats and proteins needed for nourishment it cannot do its job. So perhaps those unfriendly blues can be attributed to a deficiency in your diet.

How do you support your mental and emotional health with diet?

Support the health of your gut by eating foods that will fuel your brain and stabilize your mood. Food intolerances can contribute to emotional symptoms; by eating simple whole foods and a plant based diet can help your body cleanse and eliminate food intolerances. Increase your intake of B vitamins, Folic Acid, Amino Acids, and Omega 3 Fatty Acids through a nutrient dense diet.  Mood boosting foods include: dark leafy greens, beets, carrots, celery, avocados, lentils, walnuts, almonds, chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds, spirulina, chai and cacao, just to name a few.

No matter what the symptom may be, whether it affects the mind or body, treating just the symptom can never heal the root cause. Focus on creating whole health. Whenever you focus on healing the whole, all the parts that make you who you are, move into balance. A balanced body and mind know how to leave the blues behind.

Holistic Healing Diet

Holistic Healing Diet Be a Healtier You by Urban Remedy
Because the word holistic is so freely used these days, I find myself using finger quotes every time I say, “holistic.”

The term has earned its badge amongst wellness communities because it seeks to further our understanding of health. It challenges us to move beyond the, “treat the symptom,” model.

The holistic model is based upon healing at a whole level. When you give your body, mind and spirit what it needs to feel happy, whole and healthy, there is nothing else. There is the saying, “When the diet is wrong, medicine is of no use; when the diet is correct, medicine is of no need.” Food as medicine connects us to our roots and invites us to have a deeper connection to the land and the foods we eat.

At Urban Remedy, we are more than a juice brand. We are a holistic lifestyle brand.

In choosing the word holistic, we are acknowledging that good health is built on wisdom, practice and commitment. Finding your path is not always easy. We understand that having the knowledge to make better choices is what empowers people. We love that our commitment to understanding health and healing at a core level is something we can share with you.

So when we toss that word, “holistic,” out there, we are really saying,… “Hey, there is a deeper relationship you can build with yourself, with the foods you eat and with the world around you. If you are committed to a truly holistic lifestyle we are committed to you.

Eating Organic is in! Are you?

by Megan Fleming on August 9, 2014, one comment

eating organically with urban remedy

There is a whole slew of information out about organic vs. conventional. For every reason not to opt for organic, there is a better reason why you should opt for it. Think about it for yourself…

Is organic food really better?

Yes! The idea behind conventional farming is that we are enhancing the growth of a plant with chemicals and then applying more chemicals so that the plant remains perfect until it is harvested. You may recall your mother saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” There was no mention of organic in that line, right? That’s because we didn’t need to use the word organic. Food used to be grown much more simply. In other words, everything was organic without even being labeled as such.

Organic foods are growing in popularity.

Many conventional grocery stores now have their own organic section. Why? Because consumers have demanded it. This growing movement towards organic is basically stating that people care about what they put into their bodies. It is common sense to eat organic foods and juices.

Non Organic foods contain pesticides and toxins.

The body so beautifully and naturally filters out toxins, BUT the problem lies within the fact, that if your regular diet contains pesticides, you may be overloading your system with an accumulation of too many toxins. When this happens, the organs that function to detoxify the body become weakened. This can lead to a variety of health ailments. Even the EPA considers a high percentage of pesticides to be carcinogenic.

Organic Foods Help to Detoxify

Strengthen your liver, the powerhouse of detoxification.  If you can’t commit to organic 100% of the time, create ways to help your body detox. Daily intake of organic juice is incredibly cleansing and alkalizing. Start your day with a raw green juice on an empty stomach to flush toxins, support your immune system and jumpstart your digestion each morning. A 5 day cleanse, once seasonally will help support your liver and overall health.

Know where your food is coming from and how its grown.

Visit a local organic farm. Research farm to table delivery services. Locate your nearest Farmer’s Market. Find out how to regularly access the best food for you and your family.

Grow your own food.

Explore how you can eat within your climate and season by growing your own foods. Perhaps down the road, you’ll be inspired to transform that (beautiful yet purposeless) lawn around your house into a garden space. Imagine driving through a neighborhood and seeing food growing everywhere.  You can change the world by starting with how you live in your own little space.

Truth or Trend? Eating Seasonally is what its all about!

by Megan Fleming on August 1, 2014, no comments

Eating Seasonally Urban Remedy

Eating in Season is better for you. We’ve all heard eating seasonally is better for us, as well as better for the environment. But what does that really mean?

Here are some perfect reasons for why eating what’s fresh off the vine is a winning proposition:

9 Great Reasons to Eat Seasonally

  1. Ripe food is good food.
Plain and simple, it tastes better.
  2. The fresher your food, the more nutrients.
As days pass, nutrients diminish. When produce is straight from the earth, it’s bursting with living enzymes.
  3. Foods that travel across the globe are not kind to the environment.
Carrying produce from faraway farms to your local grocery store means a lot of additional miles and jet fuel.
  4. Say no to fake foods.
Part of the reason farmers spray, plump wax and irradiate foods is because people demand them out of their growing region, out of season. Stick to what’s local, natural and organic.
  5. Save money.
When things are abundantly grown locally they cost less.
  6. Support the local economy.
Personally, we’d rather support local farmers than big business.
  7. Farmer’s markets are fun.
It’s a great way to spend a weekend morning, tasting local bites and buying the freshest possible produce. Try it.
  8. Expand your cooking horizons.
If you go to a local market and buy what’s fresh, like peaches, corn and radishes, you might put them together in an interesting new salad. It’s a fun way to excite your palate.
  9. Seasonal foods meet our bodies’ needs.
In the summer, it’s hot, so we’re gifted with nature’s natural coolers: cucumbers, cantaloupes, watermelons, nectarines, peaches, plums, apricots, sweet peppers, avocados, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, summer squash, zucchini, tomatoes and chard.

Healthy Tips for Better Drinking Water

Healthy TIps for Better Drinking Water

No matter your vantage point, we can all agree that water is a vital resource. The fact that we can turn on the faucet and get clean water is a luxury which we should take the time to be grateful for! It can easily be overlooked.

But even more overlooked, is the idea that the clean water we take for granted may be more and more exposed to environmental pollutants.

We encourage you to drink enough water and to live healthy. But, as traces of pesticides, metals and pharmaceutical drugs are showing up in our tap water, we implore you not only to drink enough, but to make sure you are drinking enough pure water without all the extras.

Here are some healthy tips for better drinking water.

  • Set up a water filtration system to help purify your tap water
  • Tap into the National Drinking Water Database to learn more about the drinking water in your area
  • Choose safe reusable water bottles
  • Detox, squeeze a little lemon into your drinking water or infuse your water with fruit
  • Be aware, the quality of bottled water is often no better than tap water and bottled water unnecessarily contributes to more waste

Water runs through all of life and knowing that our bodies consist of mostly water, we ought think about preserving the quality and quantity of water here on earth. As we face a water deficit, think of ways that you can reduce the amount of water you use and improve the quality of the water you do use.

5 skin health remedies for glowin skin by urban remedy

So often we encounter products to put onto our bodies that promote better skin, but it is also important to consider what we are putting into our bodies.

If we neglect to honor the needs of our body, if we neglect to nourish our whole self, the tell-tale signs appear on our skin. Our skin communicates our internal health.

It has many functions, but it so importantly holds everything together; Literally, it is what protects our internal body from the external world. The skin, although it is a superficial organ, draws its health from our overall health. When you begin paying attention to your body’s needs and understand how to care for your skin from that vantage point, you can also begin to delve into the other arenas of your life that contribute to the quality of your skin.

Focus on the things you love about your skin, on what purpose it serves, and create healthier habits to promote vibrant skin from the inside out.

5 Tips for Gorgeous Summer Skin:

  • Nourish!  This summer is an ideal time to create a daily juice habit or opt for a juice cleanse. The living nutrients in juice supply your internal organs with a potent dose of vitamins and minerals. Getting gorgeous skin starts with what you put in your body.
  • Commit to H2O! Drink half of your body weight in ounces each day.
  • Put on a Mask! Try one of these simple at home recipes: Raw Honey, Papaya and Lemon -or- Avocado, Lemon and Coconut oil. These at home masks are perfectly hydrating and balancing for the needs of your skin this summer.
  • Move! Boosting circulation through exercise helps to support a that glow.
  • Breath! Healthy glowing skin requires oxygen rich blood. Oxygen rich blood can also be promoted through a living foods diet, which raw juice easily offers.
