SoulCycle And Urban Remedy Kick Off Summer At SoulCycle Malibu

We sweat, we hydrated, we noshed, and we had a blast with our friends at Soul Cycle!

Urban Remedy kicked-off summer at Soul Cycle Malibu with the Co-founders of SoulCycle, Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice, special guest Cindy Crawford and Urban Remedy’s founder, Neka Pasquale L.Ac M.S.
The dynamic Malibu community came together to ride and munch on an assortment of Urban Remedy’s raw ready-to-eat meals, snacks and cold-pressed juices.
Summer health and wellness was top-of-mind as Neka Pasquale shared a few of her summer health and wellness tips to staying fit, lean and energized:

  • Hydrate, hydrate and hydrate again. Fresh green juices have naturally occurring minerals and electrolytes to hydrate at a cellular level.
  • Eat seasonal fresh organic summer foods that are high in antioxidants and help boost your metabolism like blueberries, acai and dark leafy greens. Look for foods with a vibrant color and you will know they are full of antioxidants – eat the rainbow!
  • Watch-out for juices with a high glycemic index (keep your sugar intake low). The greener the better.
  • Keep your body moving and mix up your routine: Soul Cycle, swim, jump rope and chase your kiddos at the park. Participate in an activity that makes you happy.

The fun filled day was as delicious at it was healthy. See more of our fun day below!

A Salad a Day Keeps the Weight Away

by Rebecca on May 13, 2014, no comments

At Urban Remedy, we have noticed the negative stigma attached to salads, and are just curious: What gives?! Salads can be delicious, nutritious, fresh, and a great weapon against weight gain. Here are a few helpful hints for how to get the most out of your salads.

untitluntitluntitlKale Salad Solo.jpgBye Bye Bread: Eating bread is one of the worst ways you can start a meal. Packed with gluten (unless you are eating a gluten-free variety), bread expands in your stomach filling you up, but with simple carbohydrates that spike your metabolism. These simple carbs diminish your immediate appetite, but leave you starving 30 minutes later. Instead, starting  your dinner with a salad course layers your stomach with leafy-green roughage, leaving you still hungry for the main event. Roughage is also rich in fiber (a mineral with laxative properties) to keep your regular digestion on track.

Oil-based Dressings: Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat soluble, meaning they dissolve in fat. So, if your diet eliminates all fats, these vitamins will have a hard, if not impossible, time absorbing into your body. The best way to combat this problem? Use oil-based salad dressings. Olive or nut oils are packed with omega-3 fatty acids (the good kind of cholesterol), and provide your body with the best kinds of fats to aid vitamin absorption.

lettuceCollageMix those Greens: Different kinds of leafy greens sport different benefits. Mixing a variety of different leafy greens into your bowl bumps up the number of vitamins and minerals your are getting out of one meal. Plus, having this variety of flavor keeps the palate interested, so your salad doesn’t taste boring. At Urban Remedy, our Zen Salad and Shredded Kale Salad apply this mixing method for ultimate health benefits and taste bud satisfaction.

Don’t dread your salad! Just keep is fun and fresh, and you’re sure to be weight-free and flavor-happy!

Say Goodbye to Acid Reflux

by Rebecca on May 8, 2014, 2 comments

Are you a victim of acid reflux? Suffer no more! Take a look at these simple yet effective ways we’ve pulled together which can help you can reduce your acid reflux symptoms for a happier, healthier digestive system.

kaleCropKale

Kale is rich in sulfur, calcium, iron and Vitamin A, which help support the stomach and heal duodenal ulcers, thereby lowering the stomach’s acid levels. Acid reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) fails to close properly. While eating kale will not aid the LES’s function, the minerals found in Kale can decrease the stomach’s acid levels, which can help lower the amount of stomach acid available for escape. At Urban Remedy, we love Kale in all of our juice cleanses and salads. For a special crunchy treat, try our kale chips as your next afternoon snack!

Alkaline Diet

Assortment of fruits and vegetables inside box

For those of us looking for a more drastic change, switching to an alkaline diet maybe be the answer. An alkaline diet balances your body’s natural pH levels, neutralizing overly acidic stomach bile, thereby decreasing your acid reflux.

How to start: Decrease consumption of meat, poultry, grains, fish, milk, cheese, shellfish, and salt. Instead, try adding leafy greens, root veggies, fresh fruit, legumes and nuts into your daily diet. Our Super Green cleanse is a perfect way to jumpstart this kind of diet change.

Raw Purple Cabbage

Kale Salad Solo.jpg

Eating raw purple cabbage or drinking raw purple cabbage juice (which you can find in our Pink Lemonade) are two amazing ways to tame your tummy. Cabbage is a naturally alkalizing food which helps regulate the body’s pH levels. In just 7 days, adding this leafy veggie into your diet can significantly reduce digestive issues, and even shrink ulcers!

Additional Perks? Purple cabbage is rich in sulfur, a premiere mineral for repairing and purifying the blood. Cleaner blood better transports oxygen throughout the body, increasing overall energy. Woo! Purple Cabbage also has anti-cancer causing properties. At Urban Remedy, we love purple cabbage in our Shredded Kale Salad.

With healthy ingredients available to diffuse acid reflux symptoms, it is easy to decrease your discomfort, and live tummy happy!

Juice for Thought: Ingredients for Better Memory

by Rebecca on May 6, 2014, one comment

At Urban Remedy, when it comes to the health of your mind, we mind. Studies have shown omega-3 fatty acids (aka the good cholesterol) improve brain function and decrease the symptoms of various mental illnesses. These fatty acids even help the brain regenerate, as found when doctors recently treated a coma patient with a high dosage, and the patient awoke. Amazing! The one tricky bit about omega 3 fatty acids though, remains that the body does not produce them naturally. To acquire these benefits, one must consume omega-3 fatty acids via external sources.

Luckily, at Urban Remedy we are longtime fans of omega-3 fatty acids, and include their mind-soothing goodness in many of our juices and drinks. If you are looking to add omega fats to your diet, here are three ingredients, and their juice compatriots, to consider incorporating.

almonds2.jpgAlmond Milk: Almonds help alkalize the blood, relieve liver qi stagnation, and improve cognitive function. The strands of ALA omega fatty acids in almonds link together to produce DHA, which in turn helps rebuild brain cell membranes. Drinking almond milk daily can increase the effectiveness of anti-depressants, and improve memory function. Experience these healthy effects with one of our several almond milk varieties for a delicious does of mental calm.

624-810x1024.jpgAçai Berries: Açaí berries are high in antioxidants, which prevent disease, and high in those same precious ALA omega fatty acids, which improve brain function. According to some studies, these ALA omega fats may in fact be helpful in correcting certain imbalances in the minds of menopausal women. At Urban Remedy, our Time Machine has a perfect dose of açai for balancing your mind, and your appetite.

chia seed used in juiceChia Seeds: Chia seeds also provide the brain with ALA omega fatty acids, 3 and 6 to be exact. These fatty acids can increase the remembering, concentration, and learning levels in those who suffer from ADHD. For a healthy dose of chia seeds, try a Warrior juice (featured in our Signature Cleanse), or our Chocolate Banana, Green Berry, or Pineapple Coconut  smoothies.

The mind is a terrible thing to starve. Feed yours with the yummy omega fat-rich foods it craves, for calmer, clearer thoughts all day long.

5 Tips for a Weekend Detox

by Rebecca on May 2, 2014, one comment

After a busy workweek, a quick weekend detox retreat can boost morale and reinvigorate your health for the following. However, at Urban Remedy, we know going to a retreat can get cumbersome. Here are some weekend activities and foods/juices you can try for an especially detoxifying weekend, without venturing too far off schedule.

market-6.jpgBeets: Beets, the ruby of root vegetables, are bursting with minerals like magnesium, calcium, zinc, and iron. These minerals help clean the blood by flushing toxins from the body. With cleaner blood, oxygen moves more easily to the heart, brain, and other organs, boosting energy and mental clarity. At Urban Remedy, we love roasted beets at dinner or sipping them throughout the day in our After Party for that extra kick of wellness.

Sauna: Sweat is your friend! Not only does sweat regulate body temperature, but it also eradicates toxins through your glands and skin in less than 15 minutes! An important but often forgotten trick to remember when visiting the sauna is to take rehydration breaks. The goal of sauna-ing is not to lose water weight (though that can be an added bonus), but rather to flush out toxins. Drinking more liquids increases the routes by which toxins can exit the body. If you have access to a local sauna, try hitting it up for a quick and relaxing weekend sweat.

ginger.jpgGinger: Spicy yet fresh, ginger increases your metabolism which in turn flushes toxins out of the body faster. Added bonus? Ginger also treats nausea. If your detox becomes too intense (meaning you dehydrate) chew on some ginger followed by a glass of water to rehydrate. At Urban Remedy, our Pink Lemonade has the kind of gingery kick you’re seeking this weekend. Pair it with our Ginger Brittle for a duo that will give you a deep detox!

how to do a juice cleane: after the cleanseBirkram Yoga: Originating in India, this form of exercise involves practicing yoga in a studio set to 105° Fahrenheit. The elevated room temperature boosts sweat gland function, rapidly alleviating toxins. At the same time the yoga poses increase circulation, reinvigorating your muscles and clearing the mind. A true win, win! Like using saunas, rehydration is crucial when practicing Bikram yoga. So remember that water!

Pineapple: This island fruit is like a vacation for your colon. Pineapple contains the digestive enzyme bromelain which helps cleanse your colon. This cleanse flushes away any toxins stored in your intestines for a rejuvenated digestive tract. At Urban Remedy, our Pineapple Coconut shake has your perfect dose of pineapple power.

Let this weekend ready you for the week ahead. Just detox the day away!

Coffee: The Benefits Behind your Buzz

by Rebecca on April 28, 2014, no comments

What’s our newest Urban Remedy obsession? Cold- pressed coffee! This delicious antioxidant oracle makes mornings burst with energy and afternoons perk right up. In addition to tasting delicious we just cannot get enough of are the health benefits!

So, Coffee is Good for me?

health benefits of coffee
Coffee is actually one of the highest antioxidant per capita drinks available on the market today. Studies have shown that the free-radical-fighting antioxidants in coffee have also proven to lower liver cancer risk. This bean-brewed elixir can even protect against cirrhosis of the liver. Research also demonstrates that coffee can boost certain hormone-regulating proteins crucial in maintaining the body’s decreased risk of type-II diabetes development. Sounds like a wonder drink to us!

Okay, but What about the Caffeine?

Yes, caffeine is a stimulant, and yes, you’ll find it in caffeinated coffee. There are 95mg of caffeine in a generically brewed caffeinated cup. Though when consumed in excess caffeine intake can result in unpleasant side effects, in moderation, this natural stimulant boosts energy and can even reduce risk of Parkinson’s disease. An all-natural energy boost with preventative properties? Yes please!

Oh, and What’s this about a Cold Brew?

When you think coffee, you probably think heat. Even an iced coffee must come from that previously brewed hot liquid, right? Not necessarily. You can also cold-brew! The cold brewing process garners the same coffee from the same ground coffee beans, but with added benefits. For example, cold-brewed coffee has lower acidity levels due to the lack of heat during the brewing process. This lower acidity level, while aiding digestion, also gives the finished product a slightly sweeter flavor. The down side? This process does take significantly longer than a heated brew; 12+ hours.

Oh but don’t you fret! At Urban Remedy, we’ve got your Cold-Brew ready to taste right now. For an extra special treat, try our Cold-Brew Light and Sweet, lightly sweetened with a touch of coconut sugar. Easy and delicious!

Final Fun Fact: Cold-brew coffee is very popular in Japan. Who knew?!

Young at Heart

by Rebecca on April 22, 2014, 2 comments

foods to eat to keep you healthy and in loveMaybe you’ve heard that love makes the heart grow fonder? Well, at Urban Remedy we believe healthy eating makes the heart grow stronger! Heart health starts with the food you eat to keep your circulatory system spritely. Here are a few of our favorite ingredients for maintaining heart health.

Garlic: High cholesterol levels are dangerous foes in the heart health game. With cholesterol-clogged arteries, blood (and therefore oxygen) cannot easily access the heart, putting this vital organ in danger of failure. Garlic has shown to lower cholesterol levels, making this herb a vital ally in your quest for heart health. At Urban Remedy, we love garlic in our kale chips!

Beets: Beets are blood cleaners. Full of antioxidants and nitrates, beet juice rids the blood of free radicals, keeping circulation efficient. Those perks not enough? As exercise is equally, if not more, important to your heart’s health, beets have shown to boost stamina, helping you hit the gym longer. We pack our After Party juice with the all that delicious beet power to keep your heart healthy, energy up, and taste buds happy!

03_31_14_heartHealthBurdock Root: Burdock root, used in many ancient folk remedies, is one of the best blood purifying herbs. It’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties have shown to soften hardened arteries and eliminate toxins from the bloodstream. With increased artery flexibility and purified blood, the heart can more easily and steadily receive oxygen. At Urban Remedy, burdock root keeps our Beam juice heart healthy and totally delicious.

Cardamom: Cardamom, a spice native to Middle Eastern cuisine, can help lower high blood pressure. High blood pressure occurs when blood, muddled with toxins, pushes against its travel ways (i.e. your arteries) at an increased rate, slowing circulation and causing the heart to work harder. Purer blood travels better. Cardamom’s antioxidant levels cleanse free radical particles from the blood easing circulation, and pressure off the heart. An added perk? Cardamom is also a mood elevator! Nourish yourself with a healthy dose of Cardamom, to boost the moods of both your heart and mind! Huzzah!

Your heart does so much for you. This week, be your heart’s hero. Exercise and eat right to help your heart win its fight, for health.

Healthy Habits To Make You Sleep Soundly

by Rebecca on March 27, 2014, no comments

The New York Times recently profiled the causes of restless sleep. At Urban Remedy, we can’t stress enough how important sleep is for your overall health and wellness. First things first, without sleep, the body’s immune system weakens, motor skills slow, and in serious cases, one can develop adrenal fatigue, which affects your adrenal glands. This condition can leave you enable to get out of bed for days, reverse your daytime/nighttime energy levels, and leave you craving sweet and salty foods. No thank you!

For a better night’s sleep, try adding these three things into your daily routine.

PicMonkey Collage.jpgMagnesium: Magnesium is a main ingredient in the recipe for a good night’s sleep. This mineral helps balance blood-glucose levels, essential in steadying your body’s metabolism. Let’s say, you know… just for example, that you eat sugary snacks all day long, especially before bed. A few hours later, mid-REM cycle, guess what? You’re hungry again! So, you wake up! If instead, your daily diet consists of minerals like magnesium, which regulates blood-glucose levels, you are less likely to get hungry in the nighttime, and more likely to sleep soundly. Apple cider vinegar, cacao, and parsley are ingredients packed with this sleep-soothing mineral. Looking for a yummy nighttime snack? Try our Urban Remedy Hot Chocolate for some sweet cacao goodness!

Urban Remedy Be Calm Vanilla Nut MilkNight Cap: Keeping on the blood sugar kick, like Magnesium, adding a simple dose of cashew milk as a nightly night cap can keep you sleeping soundly. This bedtime treat can steady your blood sugar levels for an extended amount of time, giving you that full 8 hour dream-filled slumber. At Urban Remedy, we love to relax and add the sweet flavors of cinnamon and vanilla to our cashew milk night cap. Hungry for more? Our Nourish cashew milk includes cardamom, for added detoxifying action. Double duty!

Acupuncture: This ancient chinese ritual consists of sticking small needles into particular pressure points to alleviate tension. Studies have found that acupuncture can actual increase nighttime melatonin levels, a natural depressant produced by the brain to calm the body’s nervous system. Is chronic pain keeping your nights restless? Acupuncture can also lower symptoms of chronic pain. Pain-free bodies lead to dream-full nights! Sounds great to us!

Try changing up your daily routine today, for sounder sleep tonight. You know what they say… 8 hours a day keeps the wrinkles away!

Nuts for Nut Milk!

Almond and Cashew milks are delicious substitutes for regular milk, packed with high levels of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and calcium to round out your beautifully balanced diet.

Almond Milk: The history of this delicious nut milk harkens all the way back to the middle ages. At Urban Remedy, we love our almond milk sweetened with dates and vanilla. For an extra special treat, try our cacao almond milk and mint cacao almond milk. Life just got a little sweeter!

Urban Remedy Be Calm Vanilla Nut Milk

2 women2.jpgCashew Milk: Cashews are power-packed with minerals like magnesium, copper, potassium, and iron. Potassium decreases the body’s lactic acid production, eliminating cramping, while iron strengthens the blood, naturally boosting  your high-energy day. High in fiber and low in cholesterol, cashew milk perfectly compliments your daily diet. Other perks? It’s a perfect component in any gluten-free, raw, or vegan lifestyle. At Urban Remedy, we Relax with vanilla and cinnamon flavored cashew milk for a sweet and spicy treat. Craving even more spice? Try our Nourish milk, for that extra ginger-y kick.
