The Well section of the NYTimes just ran a piece in support of fruit! Here at Urban Remedy we are major fruit supporters. Here is a list of our favorite fruits, and what makes them so good for you.
Bananas: One of the best sources of potassium, an essential mineral for maintaining normal blood pressure, bananas are the perfect fruit to eat after a workout, first thing when you wake up in the morning, in a juice, or just as a snack any ol’ time of day! Normal blood pressure keeps your circulation steady, providing your body with an even flow of oxygen and therefore energy throughout your entire day. Another fun potassium fact? This mineral also aids muscle cramping, so ladies, you know when you’ll need ‘em. At Urban Remedy we love bananas in our Chocolate Banana smoothie and our brittles.
Blueberries: Blueberries are full of antioxidants that reduce the kind of cell damage possibly responsible for cancer development. Talk about a superfood! That’s not their only claim to fame… Blueberries also improve your vision and promote weight control. Whether you drink them down in a juice, yummy smoothie, or just grab a handful on the go, blueberries are a fantastic fruit to add into your diet. We love sipping on some blueberries in our young love juice and greenberry smoothie. Sweet and super!
Raspberries: Nature’s sweet tarts, raspberries purify the blood and benefit the liver and kidneys. Pure blood carries increased levels of oxygen to your organs, naturally boosting energy, while a healthy liver and kidneys amplify your body’s detoxing efficiency. Sounds fabulous to us! You can find raspberries in our warrior juice as well as our PB&J smoothie. Drink your way to a healthier you.
The winter can be stressful. At Urban Remedy we want your winter memories to be family filled instead of catastrophe ridden. Here are a few yoga poses to destress after even the most anxiety inducing holiday soirée season.
Child’s Pose: Kneeling on the ground, sit back on your heels and touch your forehead to the mat with your arms either stretched out in front of you, or lying by your sides. Often encouraged as a resting stance during challenging classes, child’s pose stretches your low back, while also reseting your nervous system. With child’s pose in your back pocket, that failed holiday casserole will never get you down again!
Standing Forward Bend: With your feet planted shoulder width apart, slowly fold over one vertebrae at a time until your hands reach your shins, feet, or the floor. Considered an inversion because your head is below your heart, this pose increases blood flow to the brain, reinvigorating your mind with energy and clarity. Perfect for another round of grandpa’s ‘jokes’…
Corpse Pose: Shavasanah, or corpse pose, is typically the final pose of any yoga class. Used as a gateway to post-workout meditation, this pose is a perfect remedy for calming all pre-holiday party jitters. Lie on your back with your palms facing up and focus your attention on the breath. If your mind needs a bit more help calming down, try counting down to 10 without any other thoughts popping into your mind. A thought popped up? Start back at 10. Just like that, you’re a countdown away to holiday bliss!
Rachael Ray’s not the only foodie in love with EVOO. Here at Urban Remedy we know that extra virgin olive oil contains phytonutrients like polyphenols that protect against inflammation, an underlying cause of many health issues. With lower inflammation, you’re less likely to feel that achey stiffness of winter, for a season full of energy and cheer!
Why Extra Virgin? Extra Virgin refers to the grade of oil you are getting. Extra virgin olive oil is the highest grade olive oil, equipped with the purest and freshest olive flavor. Mmm!
Where can you use extra virgin olive oil? Pretty much anywhere you would normally use butter. Also, if butter is just too near and dear to your heart to lose try using a half butter/half EVOO combo to get that same buttery taste with less calories and fat. At Urban Remedy we love extra virgin olive oil on our kale chips, the perfect crunchy salty snack on a cozy winter’s day.
At Urban Remedy we know that this New Year you want to look and feel your best. Celebrate a renewed commitment to yourself with some easy to do yoga moves. Here is a list of our three favorite yoga poses to keep your energy up and your waist trim!
Eagle Pose: Bending your legs and balancing on one foot, wrap your other leg around your stable leg hooking your foot behind your calf. Then cross one arm over the other and wrap until both palms touch. Hold, then switch sides. This wrapping and balancing pose aids digestion, keeping your waist slender and your look fabulous!
Bow Pose: Lying on your stomach, reach around and grab each leg in hand. Gently push against your hands with your legs and lift your body like a bow off the ground. A few minutes in this pose massages and stretches your stomach muscles and boosts your energy making you a sharp shooter.
Spinal Twist: Lie on your back with your arms stretched out in a T-shape. Keeping your arms in place, cross one leg over the other. Hold, then switch sides. This twist massages your organs and glands, increasing circulation and digestion for a quick little slimming trick!
Cranberries are this holiday season’s tangy superstar. Fresh, sweet, and festive, these berries are packed with vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants making a dish with cranberries the healthiest companion for all of your traditional holiday favorites.
Why so healthy? The antioxidants in cranberries help eradicate cancer-causing free-radicals from the bloodstream and body, lowering your risk for mutant cell growth.
Feeling a cold coming? Pop a few cranberries for a kick of Vitamin C. Vitamin C boosts your immune system, helping you fight off even the peskiest virus.
Oh and if that’s not enough… the phytonutrients in cranberries act as anti-inflammatories keeping your body and mind mellow in wellness this holiday season.
This year, keep calm with cranberries!
Pumpkins, they’re not just for carving! Pumpkin is a winter squash packed with nutritional benefits. It’s the perfect seasonal ingredient and here are five reasons why…
