10 Tips to Less Stress

10 tips to less stress by Urban Remedy

When we talk about health, it’s impossible to just talk about the body. Health is the balance and connection we feel within our body, mind, spirit and the world around us. The word stress has become so commonplace that we take it for granted. You may have even muttered the sentence, “I’m feeling stressed,” at some point today.

Every subtle aspect of your being communicates within itself. This means, when you are stressed your body feels it, stores it and reacts against it. Stress affects your digestion, heart rate, skin, muscles, joints and just about every cell and system of your body. Stress can be the antagonist of a variety of health ailments and without proper management, stress can stifle the goodness of life.

Do yourself a favor, stop talking about how you’re going to manage your stress, just do it. Take one of these simple actions each day:

Eliminate Stress with these 10 Tips.

  1. 20 minutes of exercise.  Try ten, 2 minute high intensity workouts. Try a cluster of running sprints, swimming sprints, cycling sprints – push your body hard for a few minutes, rest and repeat.
  2. Sit in nature without the noise of people or cars. Close your eyes and listen to the wind, the birds, the sounds of nature around you. Tune into the vibrations of nature.
  3. Alternate nostril breathing. Place the index and middle finger between your eyebrows, then use your thumb and fourth finger to alternately press on nostrils. Breath, exhale and repeat.
  4. Connect with people who make you feel good.
  5. Take a hot bath and add your favorite soul soothing essential oil- lavender, vetiver, sandalwood, melissa, and bergamot are all calming and mood balancing.
  6. Write, paint, play music, or express yourself creatively and freely.
  7. Give yourself an emotional time out. When you feel stressed in the midst of an activity, at work, with the kids…, excuse yourself to a quiet space for 5 minutes and practice deep breathing and reground yourself.
  8. Designate a caring friend to be your deep listening partner. Make time for a 20 minute phone date each week. Listen deeply to their stresses that week and let them listen to yours.
  9. Unlearn the notion of “don’t cry.” If you feel you need to cry, let yourself. Tears are your body’s natural way of releasing stress and a good cry will make you feel so much better.
  10. Eat well. Nourish your body with nutritionally dense foods. Learn to listen to your body and discover what foods serve you best. You can never eat too many vegetables.

And don’t miss the De-Stress Spike by Urban Remedy, its one of our suite of nutrition supplement spikes, specially designed to provide unique health benefits. Our Spikes are the perfect nutrition supplement for adding to your juice or meal shake, adding to water, or just shooting straight.

The Cold Brew Ritual

Cold Brew Coffee by Urban Remedy

For some of us, coffee is an essential daily ritual. Honor it…

When you need a  pick-me-up, choose one that will continue to hold you up.  The rich and smooth blend of cold brew coffee can actually support your body at a deeper level. The cold brew process of making coffee never uses heat. Coffee beans are slowly brewed for 24 hours to create a beautifully rich coffee that is much less acidic and much more kind on your tummy.

Life should never be about depriving yourself of the things you love, but instead finding a healthier version.  Here’s the key: If you love it, make sure it loves you back.

Too much overly processed coffee in your diet can deplete your body and create an imbalance. On the other, cold brew coffee (Did I mention it’s loaded with antioxidants?) can actually be of benefit to your liver and support your overall health.

So, the next time you’re craving coffee and a donut, ask yourself – “Will it love me back”? Of course it won’t, but you have something even better now! It’s time to make friends with organic cold brew coffee, and do yourself a favor, add an occasional almond brownie. The way we believe in food is simple. Give yourself the joy of experiencing what you love, what makes you feel good;  just make sure it loves you back. Stay faithful to your health while enjoying the flavors of life. That’s all we ask.

Lasagna that loves you back

raw vegan lasagna by urban remedy

Lasagna may be one comfort food that is subtly layered into your memory. The aroma, of hearty tomato sauce held together by those dense layers of pasta and thick cheese may have the ability to stir your emotions, just a tad. Lets face it, food is not only tied to our nutritional needs, it is often linked to our emotional body.

We are emotional creatures with needs that sometimes surpass nutritional facts. As you begin to connect more to the concept that food is healing, explore what works best for your constitution, ask yourself what experiences around food are linked to joy.

Give yourself the ability to eat what you love, but edited to be more healthy, and let it love you back. This raw vegan lasagna recipe was made for you if you want the experience of eating lasagna with a lot of wonderful added benefits…

Eliminate Toxins with a Juice Cleanse

by Megan Fleming on September 9, 2014, no comments

juice-cleanse-by-urban-remedy-eliminate-toxins

There isn’t a lot we can do to eliminate environmental toxins, but we can eliminate those in our own home.

Cleaning agents, solvents, body products, and beauty products can consist of harmful chemicals, metals and preservatives. Over time, these toxins can accumulate in the body and affect its systems. This toxic accumulation can have a huge affect on the brain, the nervous system, the endocrine system, and the organs. By rethinking the products you use in your home and on your body, you are creating a place of health within your home.

The minute we step outside our home, it’s a different story.  We are bombarded by millions of particles that can gradually deteriorate our health. Here’s the good news… Our body is beautifully designed to help us filter out anything harmful, working to keep us healthy, despite living in a polluted world.  The body is wise and almost always knows how to heal itself. Even so, it needs our support to remain clean and toxin free. Our actions, especially when it comes to what we eat, can support our body in its continuous effort to restore vitality.

One of the best ways you can cleanse and alkalize your body is through a raw juice cleanse. Raw juice does two things: it restores nutrients to the body and it eliminates toxins. If you drink raw juice daily, you are significantly supporting your body’s effort to sustain optimal health! If you are new to cleansing, try a 1 day cleanse weekly for one month. Start with a signature cleanse, move up to the purity cleanse and bring it on home with the super green. The more you cleanse, the more your body will beg to be nourished and restored. When you support your body in feeling its best, it will let you know what it needs to be healthy and whole.

Jumpstart your Metabolism

Jumpstart your Metabolism

When you hear the word metabolism, the words fit and thin might resonate within your auto-brain. There are just certain loaded words in our culture that excite us. Metabolism, followed by the word booster, is one of those words.

Metabolism, is more of a grand concept than the simplified version we have come to know, as it refers to body weight. Metabolism is the interaction of enzymes within all cells that allows them to grow, reproduce and maintain life. Without metabolism, you simply could not exist. Metabolism includes the very important transformative role of digestion: breaking down the proteins, carbohydrates and fats of your diet to provide the energy your body needs to function.

Yeah okay, so lets get to the “how” we increase our metabolism.

Your habits, lifestyle and diet greatly influence the rate of your metabolism. Raw living foods offer their own enzymes, which means your body doesn’t have to work as hard to digest them.  Think of your metabolism as a fire; the wood being the foods you’ve eaten and the strength of the fire depending on the quality of your digestive enzymes. Without the strength of the fire, the wood cannot burn. The residing wood represents the undigested food in your gut. Over time, this creates excess fat where toxins can accumulate.

One key to increasing your metabolism is increasing the fire within.

Boost Your Metabolism The Fire within

Boosting your metabolism isn’t just about slimming down, even though that can be a resulting perk of caring for the needs of your body. Think of it this way, all streams and rivers eventually lead to an ocean. The ocean of you represents the deepest core level of your health; whenever you begin to attend to the channels that connect to that ocean, you learn to eventually connect to the whole source. When you boost and support a healthy metabolism, you are benefiting your whole body.

Food as medicine is truly about supporting the systems of your body via optimal nutrition.

We have thoughtfully created our cleanses, meals and kits to support you and your efforts towards better health. Our Metabolism Kit was specifically crafted to help you boost your metabolism. Like most of us who lead busy lives and desire accessible healthy choices, our Metabolism Kit offers you an easy way to move through your day with everything you need to feel nourished, satisfied and on target.

Fight Depression with a Healthy Diet

by Megan Fleming on August 19, 2014, no comments

fight depression with a healthy diet by Urban Remedy

An astounding number of Americans suffer from Depression.

Studies show, that despite current efforts to treat depression, it is becoming more prevalent. The U.S. Center for Mental Health Services even states that 1 in every 33 children suffer from depression. That is a hard statistic to accept. With depression rates rising, especially in children, shouldn’t we be asking more questions?

What is causing this significant increase in depression?

For one, just the rate at which we move on all levels has increased. With technology, transportation allows us to move to and from places more quickly than ever. Our brain processes information at a high speed rate alongside the internet. We are able to do more and know more as the world around us continues to move faster.

What does our high speed world do to our nervous system and our actual ability to keep up?

In our pursuit of survival, success and happiness, have we forgotten the importance of slowing down and making time for our self? An important aspect of slowing down and tuning into our intrinsic world is that we learn to listen to our own body.  The multi-tasking mode of our society can drawn us away our internal self and nature. In fact, studies have shown that the lack of unstructured play and time in nature is greatly contributing to emotional disorders in children. Are adults any different? I think we all need time to play, be and get lost in nature.

How has our diet evolved and changed over time? Does what we eat affect our emotional health?

Another aspect of everyday life that has significantly changed over time is our diet. The average American diet is high in calorie and low in nutrition. We have been taught that it is the brain that controls the rest of the body, but the brain, in fact, receives most of its signals from the gut. If the enteric nervous system, (the intrinsic nervous system of your gut), is not receiving the vitamins, minerals, fats and proteins needed for nourishment it cannot do its job. So perhaps those unfriendly blues can be attributed to a deficiency in your diet.

How do you support your mental and emotional health with diet?

Support the health of your gut by eating foods that will fuel your brain and stabilize your mood. Food intolerances can contribute to emotional symptoms; by eating simple whole foods and a plant based diet can help your body cleanse and eliminate food intolerances. Increase your intake of B vitamins, Folic Acid, Amino Acids, and Omega 3 Fatty Acids through a nutrient dense diet.  Mood boosting foods include: dark leafy greens, beets, carrots, celery, avocados, lentils, walnuts, almonds, chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds, spirulina, chai and cacao, just to name a few.

No matter what the symptom may be, whether it affects the mind or body, treating just the symptom can never heal the root cause. Focus on creating whole health. Whenever you focus on healing the whole, all the parts that make you who you are, move into balance. A balanced body and mind know how to leave the blues behind.

Kale Trip: Eat Healthy while Traveling

Kale Trip Eat Healthy while Traveling by Urban Remedy

While on the journey to eating well, there can be some bumps in the road. Traveling can certainly present some food challenges.

My recent experience proved that it doesn’t have to be hard. With a little planning, an openness for adventure and a dab of creativity, you can eat clean while away from the certainty of your own kitchen.

Healthy while Camping infused water

I departed from Marin County, California to spend 2 weeks on the road with my family, (exploring 10 different states), prepped for a lack of real food options. What I learned was surprising. Our country is scattered with charming natural food co-ops, fabulous farmer’s markets, healthy restaurants and grocery stores that have their own organic section.

Here is Your Guide to Keeping it Real on the Road:

  • Stock up on healthy foods that will keep you covered for a few days. Pack a cooler full of fresh fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds and anything perishable. Pack a separate bag of non perishables that make easy snacks or meals.
  • Make time to pull over and explore scenic routes. Find a picnic table,  cut up some fresh fruit and enjoy the moment.
  • Create a map of your route. Pin all the quality food stops along the way. It’s great to discover each town’s local organic food scene.
  • Create infused waters by adding some fresh herbs, citrus or fruit to your water. Let it sit for an hour. Your water will come alive with natural flavor.
  • Order fresh raw juices and meals and have them shipped to wherever you are traveling to.
  • Even when camping or “roughing it,” create an experience when eating.  Add fresh picked roadside flowers to your table and don’t forget the candle light.

Healthy Traveler
Recipes for the Road:

Collard Green Wraps
Spread hummus on a large collard leaf, add shredded carrots, avocado, cilantro, seaweed and toasted almonds. Wrap and enjoy!

Endive Boats
Create a quinoa salad with fresh fennel, jalapeno, parsley, cilantro, lime, garlic and tamari, toss and then scoop into open endive leaves

Oatmeal Stir
If you are craving a hot meal, oatmeal is so quick and easy to cook. Put some coconut oil, garlic and tamari in a wok with bok choy, kale, bell pepper, and sprouted mung bean shoots, serve over warm oatmeal.

And just remember, … “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey that matters.” Honor your body no matter where you are. Have fun exploring new foods in new places.!

Holistic Healing Diet

Holistic Healing Diet Be a Healtier You by Urban Remedy
Because the word holistic is so freely used these days, I find myself using finger quotes every time I say, “holistic.”

The term has earned its badge amongst wellness communities because it seeks to further our understanding of health. It challenges us to move beyond the, “treat the symptom,” model.

The holistic model is based upon healing at a whole level. When you give your body, mind and spirit what it needs to feel happy, whole and healthy, there is nothing else. There is the saying, “When the diet is wrong, medicine is of no use; when the diet is correct, medicine is of no need.” Food as medicine connects us to our roots and invites us to have a deeper connection to the land and the foods we eat.

At Urban Remedy, we are more than a juice brand. We are a holistic lifestyle brand.

In choosing the word holistic, we are acknowledging that good health is built on wisdom, practice and commitment. Finding your path is not always easy. We understand that having the knowledge to make better choices is what empowers people. We love that our commitment to understanding health and healing at a core level is something we can share with you.

So when we toss that word, “holistic,” out there, we are really saying,… “Hey, there is a deeper relationship you can build with yourself, with the foods you eat and with the world around you. If you are committed to a truly holistic lifestyle we are committed to you.
