The Mindful Sweet Tooth

The Mindful Sweet Tooth by Urban Remedy

So much of life blooms from a drop of nectar. It is the reason that flowers open to the sun and invite the birds and the bees to play.

That sweetness in life is at the root of our knowing to reproduce, bloom and be vital. That sweet nectar found in the rhythm of the seasons can be witnessed in a thriving garden, as well as in our own desire to feel satisfied. The bees joyously labor over the flower, and from that we get the fruit and honey that fills our own table with variety and an abundance of nutrients.

Sugar, naturally found in the tissues of most plants, has undergone some changes throughout history. These changes have more recently left us with a refined substance enjoyed for nothing other than its taste. Recent claims go as far as defining sugar as a poison to the body. Refined sugar is full of calories, but offers zero benefits to the body. The body doesn’t know how to utilize this type of sugar and it actually depletes the body of its own minerals, vitamins and proteins. So even though we may think of poison as a substance that kills us, it is becoming more evident that over time, sugar is degrading our body and contributing to diseases that eventually do kill us. Now is a great time to end your relationship with processed sugar and make friends with some healthier sweet alternatives.

The good news for all you sweet toothed, consciously minded food enthusiasts, is that you can easily feed your sweet tooth in a more self loving way.

The sweet taste of our diet is in a variety of foods that actually help to really sustain our health and give us a sense of satiability. In Ayurvedic Medicine, food is classified into 6 tastes: Sweet, Salty, Pungent, Sour, Bitter, and Astringent. Ideally, we find a way to balance these tastes and include each in our daily diet, which means treating yourself to some sweets is truly a necessity at times.

Satisfy your sweet tooth this summer with ripe fruits, dried fruits and nutritive sweeteners such as date paste, coconut sugar and raw honey. For all you chocolate lovers with a finicky aversion to anything but the real thing, our raw Cacao Mousse promises to please.

Sweets that are healthy? Now that’s something to celebrate!

Good Health Begins with Good Habits

Good Health Good Habits with Urban Remdy

There is the popular saying that it takes 21 days to form a new habit. Lets just say there is no one prescription or time frame for all. When it comes to our health, it’s important to recognize that creating good habits is a process.

When forming a new habit, the brain actually creates new neural pathways. These neural pathways become stronger the longer you hold a habit, eventually turning a habit into a natural practice.

Lets say you have been wanting to create healthier eating habits. Look at the individual actions around your eating and create one simple plan at a time.

If eating more raw living foods is something that interests you, commit to making raw foods one of your daily meals. Over several weeks that raw meal will begin to feel normal. Preparing it, eating it and digesting it will no longer feel new. Something very cool happens when we commit to doing the same thing over and over again, it becomes just a part of how we live.

Sometimes having the knowledge to do what we want isn’t always enough. We need tools to take an idea and turn it into a practice. You can apply this to all areas of your life.

Forming a better relationship with the foods you eat requires three things: Knowledge, Good Habits and Commitment.

We’re here to support you!

A healthy outside that starts from the inside

Why is Juicing So Popular?

by Megan Fleming on September 30, 2014, no comments

Why is Juicing So Popular by Urban Remedy
Perhaps, you’ve noticed that suddenly cold pressed, raw, organic juice is EVERYWHERE. The raw juice trend speaks of our growing consciousness towards food and our desire to feed ourselves more wisely. It’s exciting to have so many juice options! But not all juice is created equal. Know what you are drinking and why. Here are some things to know if you are new to the practice!

Pasteurized Juice

Pasteurized Juice uses high temperatures to kill any bacteria in the juice. The process of pasteurization comes in handy for big food company that distributes their foods across the country. In this way, juice can be preserved and last for a long time. The majority of juices sold in grocery stores have all been pasteurized. The problem with pasteurized juice is that it maintains its sugar content, but lacks its original nutrient content. Pasteurized juice is the lowest quality of juice in terms of nutritional benefits. It is focused on preservation not health.

HPP (High Pressure Processed)

HPP juice does not use heat but instead high pressure which inactivates certain enzymes by slowing down their chemical processes. This causes the food to deteriorate. The nutrients of the juice are not completely diminished by this process, so it allows the juice to maintain a partial natural state but keeps the juice safe for short shelf life. HPP is a great option for those on the go without daily access to cold-pressed juices.

Cold Pressed Juice

Cold Press Juice extracts juice by first crushing fruits and vegetables and then pressing. This process does not interfere with the natural state of the juice and keeps all nutrients in tact. This juice has a very limited shelf life and should be enjoyed within a few days of being pressed. You are getting raw, unprocessed juice that is full of nutrients. If you don’t have a juicer or don’t have time to juice at home, cold pressed is your best friend.

When it comes to juicing, Fresh is best!

When juice is first pressed the quality of nutrients within the juice are at their highest. Consuming juice as fresh as possible will offer the greatest benefits. If you think you are getting away with a great deal on a pasteurized green juice from the grocery store, think again. The amount of healing nutrients that go into a fresh juice are unmatched. You can spend half the money, and your wallet will benefit, but your body won’t. Choose organic cold pressed whenever you can.

Here’s a tip for How to Start Juicing!

Before you go out and buy the right juicer, put yourself on a one month juice plan. Get your body used to drinking raw juice regularly. If you decide you really want to commit to juicing, then go buy the juicer. Begin gradually… Juicing is a time consuming, messy process, so don’t overwhelm yourself.  Try juicing at home 2 days a week and then treat yourself to a cold-pressed juice the other days. Do your best and let Urban Remedy support you with the rest.

Never too late to start juicing with Urban Remedy

Eat Well: Food Integrity Simplified

Food Integrity Simplified by Urban Remedy

How do you sift through all the food labels and know that you are eating clean?

Trying to eat well is challenging enough, but add in a list of food labels and mysterious ingredients and it becomes overwhelming. Non-GMO, Organic, Gluten Free, Vegan, All Natural, Fat Free … Food labels really don’t mean much. We get attached to certain words that describe food and the food industry uses those words to market their foods. Just because a label says Organic, Gluten Free etc. does NOT make it a health food. Take a moment to read ingredients. Understanding ingredients is your key to understanding what you are actually eating. Look for simple ingredients that you can pronounce and understand.

When to let it go and when to say no.

Its almost impossible to eat clean 100% of the time. Give yourself a break sometimes and don’t let your commitment to food run your life. It’s okay to occasionally let it go and enjoy that cookie your co-worker has offered (even if its not the raw vegan version that you’re used to). But also, feel good about saying no to foods that really go against your food integrity. There’s a difference between letting it go because its not a perfect food and saying no to something that doesn’t even qualify as food.

Know the most common GMO ingredients

Aspartame baking powder, canola oil (rapeseed oil), caramel color, cellulose, citric acid, cobalamin (Vitamin B12), colorose, condensed milk, confectioners sugar, anything corn based: corn flour, corn meal, corn oil, corn sugar, corn syrup, cornstarch, cottonseed oil, cyclodextrin, cystein, dextrin, dextrose, diacetyl, diglyceride, erythritol, food starch, fructose (any form), glucose, glutamate, glutamic acid, glycerides, glycerin, glycerol, glycerol monooleate, glycine, hemicellulose, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), hydrogenated starch, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, inositol, inverse syrup, inversol, invert sugar, isoflavones, lactic acid, lecithin, leucine lysinemalitol, malt, malt syrup, malt extract, maltodextrin, maltose, mannitol, methylcellulose, milk powder, milo starch, modified food starch, modified starch, mono and diglycerides, monosodium glutamate (MSG), Nutrasweet, oleic acid, Phenylalanine, phytic acid, protein isolate, shoyu, sorbitol, anything soy based, stearic acid, sugar (unless specified as cane sugar), tocopherols (vitamin E), trehalose, triglyceride. vegetable oil, xanthan gum

Ask your favorite restaurant how they can better commit to organic and non GMO ingredients.

The joy of eating out can feel stressful if you are left wondering what really goes into the foods at your favorite restaurant. It’s important to speak up.  Ask your favorite restaurants how they are doing their best to provide the best quality foods on their menu. Urban Remedy is dedicated to the highest quality; we believe that food should not only taste good. Food should always benefit your body.

10 Tips to Less Stress

10 tips to less stress by Urban Remedy

When we talk about health, it’s impossible to just talk about the body. Health is the balance and connection we feel within our body, mind, spirit and the world around us. The word stress has become so commonplace that we take it for granted. You may have even muttered the sentence, “I’m feeling stressed,” at some point today.

Every subtle aspect of your being communicates within itself. This means, when you are stressed your body feels it, stores it and reacts against it. Stress affects your digestion, heart rate, skin, muscles, joints and just about every cell and system of your body. Stress can be the antagonist of a variety of health ailments and without proper management, stress can stifle the goodness of life.

Do yourself a favor, stop talking about how you’re going to manage your stress, just do it. Take one of these simple actions each day:

Eliminate Stress with these 10 Tips.

  1. 20 minutes of exercise.  Try ten, 2 minute high intensity workouts. Try a cluster of running sprints, swimming sprints, cycling sprints – push your body hard for a few minutes, rest and repeat.
  2. Sit in nature without the noise of people or cars. Close your eyes and listen to the wind, the birds, the sounds of nature around you. Tune into the vibrations of nature.
  3. Alternate nostril breathing. Place the index and middle finger between your eyebrows, then use your thumb and fourth finger to alternately press on nostrils. Breath, exhale and repeat.
  4. Connect with people who make you feel good.
  5. Take a hot bath and add your favorite soul soothing essential oil- lavender, vetiver, sandalwood, melissa, and bergamot are all calming and mood balancing.
  6. Write, paint, play music, or express yourself creatively and freely.
  7. Give yourself an emotional time out. When you feel stressed in the midst of an activity, at work, with the kids…, excuse yourself to a quiet space for 5 minutes and practice deep breathing and reground yourself.
  8. Designate a caring friend to be your deep listening partner. Make time for a 20 minute phone date each week. Listen deeply to their stresses that week and let them listen to yours.
  9. Unlearn the notion of “don’t cry.” If you feel you need to cry, let yourself. Tears are your body’s natural way of releasing stress and a good cry will make you feel so much better.
  10. Eat well. Nourish your body with nutritionally dense foods. Learn to listen to your body and discover what foods serve you best. You can never eat too many vegetables.

And don’t miss the De-Stress Spike by Urban Remedy, its one of our suite of nutrition supplement spikes, specially designed to provide unique health benefits. Our Spikes are the perfect nutrition supplement for adding to your juice or meal shake, adding to water, or just shooting straight.

The Cold Brew Ritual

Cold Brew Coffee by Urban Remedy

For some of us, coffee is an essential daily ritual. Honor it…

When you need a  pick-me-up, choose one that will continue to hold you up.  The rich and smooth blend of cold brew coffee can actually support your body at a deeper level. The cold brew process of making coffee never uses heat. Coffee beans are slowly brewed for 24 hours to create a beautifully rich coffee that is much less acidic and much more kind on your tummy.

Life should never be about depriving yourself of the things you love, but instead finding a healthier version.  Here’s the key: If you love it, make sure it loves you back.

Too much overly processed coffee in your diet can deplete your body and create an imbalance. On the other, cold brew coffee (Did I mention it’s loaded with antioxidants?) can actually be of benefit to your liver and support your overall health.

So, the next time you’re craving coffee and a donut, ask yourself – “Will it love me back”? Of course it won’t, but you have something even better now! It’s time to make friends with organic cold brew coffee, and do yourself a favor, add an occasional almond brownie. The way we believe in food is simple. Give yourself the joy of experiencing what you love, what makes you feel good;  just make sure it loves you back. Stay faithful to your health while enjoying the flavors of life. That’s all we ask.

Lasagna that loves you back

raw vegan lasagna by urban remedy

Lasagna may be one comfort food that is subtly layered into your memory. The aroma, of hearty tomato sauce held together by those dense layers of pasta and thick cheese may have the ability to stir your emotions, just a tad. Lets face it, food is not only tied to our nutritional needs, it is often linked to our emotional body.

We are emotional creatures with needs that sometimes surpass nutritional facts. As you begin to connect more to the concept that food is healing, explore what works best for your constitution, ask yourself what experiences around food are linked to joy.

Give yourself the ability to eat what you love, but edited to be more healthy, and let it love you back. This raw vegan lasagna recipe was made for you if you want the experience of eating lasagna with a lot of wonderful added benefits…

Eliminate Toxins with a Juice Cleanse

by Megan Fleming on September 9, 2014, no comments

juice-cleanse-by-urban-remedy-eliminate-toxins

There isn’t a lot we can do to eliminate environmental toxins, but we can eliminate those in our own home.

Cleaning agents, solvents, body products, and beauty products can consist of harmful chemicals, metals and preservatives. Over time, these toxins can accumulate in the body and affect its systems. This toxic accumulation can have a huge affect on the brain, the nervous system, the endocrine system, and the organs. By rethinking the products you use in your home and on your body, you are creating a place of health within your home.

The minute we step outside our home, it’s a different story.  We are bombarded by millions of particles that can gradually deteriorate our health. Here’s the good news… Our body is beautifully designed to help us filter out anything harmful, working to keep us healthy, despite living in a polluted world.  The body is wise and almost always knows how to heal itself. Even so, it needs our support to remain clean and toxin free. Our actions, especially when it comes to what we eat, can support our body in its continuous effort to restore vitality.

One of the best ways you can cleanse and alkalize your body is through a raw juice cleanse. Raw juice does two things: it restores nutrients to the body and it eliminates toxins. If you drink raw juice daily, you are significantly supporting your body’s effort to sustain optimal health! If you are new to cleansing, try a 1 day cleanse weekly for one month. Start with a signature cleanse, move up to the purity cleanse and bring it on home with the super green. The more you cleanse, the more your body will beg to be nourished and restored. When you support your body in feeling its best, it will let you know what it needs to be healthy and whole.

Jumpstart your Metabolism

by Megan Fleming on September 3, 2014, no comments

Jumpstart your Metabolism

When you hear the word metabolism, the words fit and thin might resonate within your auto-brain. There are just certain loaded words in our culture that excite us. Metabolism, followed by the word booster, is one of those words.

Metabolism, is more of a grand concept than the simplified version we have come to know, as it refers to body weight. Metabolism is the interaction of enzymes within all cells that allows them to grow, reproduce and maintain life. Without metabolism, you simply could not exist. Metabolism includes the very important transformative role of digestion: breaking down the proteins, carbohydrates and fats of your diet to provide the energy your body needs to function.

Yeah okay, so lets get to the “how” we increase our metabolism.

Your habits, lifestyle and diet greatly influence the rate of your metabolism. Raw living foods offer their own enzymes, which means your body doesn’t have to work as hard to digest them.  Think of your metabolism as a fire; the wood being the foods you’ve eaten and the strength of the fire depending on the quality of your digestive enzymes. Without the strength of the fire, the wood cannot burn. The residing wood represents the undigested food in your gut. Over time, this creates excess fat where toxins can accumulate.

One key to increasing your metabolism is increasing the fire within.

Boost Your Metabolism The Fire within

Boosting your metabolism isn’t just about slimming down, even though that can be a resulting perk of caring for the needs of your body. Think of it this way, all streams and rivers eventually lead to an ocean. The ocean of you represents the deepest core level of your health; whenever you begin to attend to the channels that connect to that ocean, you learn to eventually connect to the whole source. When you boost and support a healthy metabolism, you are benefiting your whole body.

Food as medicine is truly about supporting the systems of your body via optimal nutrition.

We have thoughtfully created our cleanses, meals and kits to support you and your efforts towards better health. Our Metabolism Kit was specifically crafted to help you boost your metabolism. Like most of us who lead busy lives and desire accessible healthy choices, our Metabolism Kit offers you an easy way to move through your day with everything you need to feel nourished, satisfied and on target.
